☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

Can You Swim in Gibraltar?

Yes — though Gibraltar's own beaches are small and often busy. The territory has two main beaches: Eastern Beach (also called Sandy Bay) on the east side of the Rock, and Catalan Bay further south along the same coastline. Both are genuine sandy beaches with clear water, but they fill up quickly in summer. For more space and better facilities, the beaches just across the border in Spain are exceptional.

Gibraltar's Own Beaches

Eastern Beach (Sandy Bay)

Eastern Beach is the largest beach in Gibraltar — which isn't saying a huge amount, but it's a proper sandy stretch with clear water and views up towards the Rock's north face. There are sun loungers for hire, a beach bar and basic facilities. It gets very busy in summer; arrive early or visit on a weekday morning.

Getting there: take the bus from the town centre or a short taxi ride. Driving is possible but parking is limited.

Catalan Bay

Catalan Bay is a historic fishing village on Gibraltar's east coast, and its beach is one of the most picturesque settings in the territory. The village has a distinct character from the rest of Gibraltar — more Mediterranean, less British — and the waterfront restaurants serve excellent seafood. The beach itself is compact but very charming.

This is probably the nicest beach experience in Gibraltar proper, though it's small enough to feel crowded quickly in peak season.

Beaches Across the Border in Spain

Gibraltar sits at the western end of the Costa del Sol, one of Europe's most celebrated beach destinations. Within 30–90 minutes of Gibraltar you have access to dozens of excellent beaches.

La Línea de la Concepción (5 min)

The Spanish town immediately adjacent to Gibraltar has a long, wide sandy beach that's often surprisingly uncrowded — La Línea residents and day-trippers from Gibraltar use it, but major tourist infrastructure hasn't overwhelmed it. Free, easily accessible by walking across the border.

Sotogrande (20 min)

Sotogrande's beach is quieter and cleaner than many Costa del Sol spots, with clear water and a more upmarket beach club scene. The marina area is also worth visiting for lunch. Popular with Gibraltar residents for weekend escapes.

Estepona (40 min)

Estepona has made significant investments in its beach and promenade in recent years and is now considered one of the Costa del Sol's better beach towns. Excellent chiringuitos (beach bars), good infrastructure and less overdeveloped than Marbella.

Marbella (60 min)

Gibraltar residents and visitors who want the full Costa del Sol experience typically head to Marbella. The town beach is good, but the real draw is the beach clubs at Puerto Banús (Nikki Beach, Ocean Club) for those who want that experience. Book well ahead for the premium clubs in summer.

Water Temperature & Season

The sea around Gibraltar and the nearby Costa del Sol is swimmable from May to November. Water temperatures peak at around 22–24°C in August and September. In winter, temperatures drop to 16–18°C — manageable in a wetsuit but cold for casual swimming.

The best beach months are June, September and October — warm enough for swimming but without the crushing August crowds and heat.

Practical Tips

  • Pack everything you need — facilities on Gibraltar's beaches are basic.
  • Spanish beaches (La Línea onwards) are free to use; only beach clubs charge for loungers.
  • Sun protection is essential — the Rock reflects sunlight and the UV index is higher than most UK visitors expect.
  • Don't leave valuables unattended on any beach, particularly at Catalan Bay where space is tight.
