☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock
Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

Golf Near Gibraltar: The Overlooked Paradise
When people think of golf in southern Spain, they think Marbella. Valderrama. San Roque. The luxury circuit with €150+ green fees, formal dress codes and waiting lists. What they miss — and what Gibraltar residents and expats know well — is that the Campo de Gibraltar region has exceptional golf courses at genuinely affordable prices, within 20–40 minutes of the Rock.
This is the guide for golfers who want quality without the premium price tag.
The Best Budget Courses Near Gibraltar
1. Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort (18–25 mins from Gibraltar)
Alcaidesa is arguably the most dramatic course in the region and the one closest to Gibraltar. A genuine links course (rare in southern Spain) perched above the Strait with views of the Rock, Morocco and the Bay of Algeciras on every hole. Wind is a constant factor, making it a proper test.
- Green fees: €40–75 (season/time dependent)
- Twilight rate: From €30
- Distance from border: 18 minutes by car
- Best for: Links golf purists, spectacular scenery
2. Club de Golf La Duquesa (25–30 mins from Gibraltar)
La Duquesa is the Campo de Gibraltar's most popular course for regular residents — a mature, well-maintained parkland course with excellent facilities, a driving range, and green fees that remain very reasonable. It doesn't have Alcaidesa's drama, but it's more forgiving and has a welcoming, non-pretentious atmosphere.
- Green fees: €35–60 (variable by season)
- Twilight rate: From €25
- Distance from border: 25 minutes by car
- Best for: Regular play, social golf, good facilities
3. Valle Romano Golf (40 mins from Gibraltar)
Slightly further along the coast towards Estepona, Valle Romano offers some of the best value green fees on the Costa del Sol — a solid parkland course with mountain backdrops, less busy than the Marbella courses, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere.
- Green fees: €30–50
- Twilight rate: From €20
- Distance from border: 40 minutes by car
- Best for: Budget-conscious golfers, quieter rounds
4. San Roque Club — New Course (20 mins from Gibraltar)
San Roque has two courses: the famous Old Course (expensive, tournament standard) and the New Course, which is significantly more affordable and still excellent. The facilities at San Roque are superb and the New Course gets comparatively little attention. Worth checking for off-season deals.
- Green fees: €50–80 (New Course)
- Distance from border: 20 minutes by car
- Best for: Top facilities at half the Old Course price

Tips for Getting the Best Green Fee Prices
- Book online in advance — online rates are almost always cheaper than walk-in rates, often by €10–20
- Play twilight — most courses offer reduced rates from 2–3pm onwards. Summer days are long enough to finish 18 holes
- Avoid December–March peak season — this is when northern Europeans flee the cold and green fees spike. Late April, May, September and October offer good weather and quieter courses
- Use GolfNow or similar platforms — last-minute availability is sometimes sold at steep discounts
- Check club membership rates — if you're a Gibraltar resident, annual memberships at La Duquesa and Alcaidesa can work out extremely cost-effective
Getting There from Gibraltar
All courses listed are accessible by car. Park in La Línea, cross the border on foot, pick up a rental car from one of the agencies near the border, and drive. Alternatively, taxis from Gibraltar into Spain are available but can be expensive for longer journeys — negotiate a fixed price before you get in.
