☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock
Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

Gibraltar might be small, but it packs a lot into its 6.7 square kilometres — and that includes some excellent running routes. From flat coastal promenades to lung-busting hill climbs up the Rock, running in Gibraltar is a great way to see the territory, stay fit, and enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Here's where to run on the Rock.
Why Run in Gibraltar?
The weather is runnable year-round (mild winters, warm but dry summers), the scenery is spectacular, and the territory is compact enough that you can cover most of it in a single run. The running community is active, with a weekly parkrun and several running clubs.
The Best Running Routes
1. The Coastal Promenade (Easy, Flat)
From Ocean Village to Europa Point along the western coast — a flat, paved route of about 5 km each way. You'll pass marinas, the port, and Camp Bay, with the Rock above you and the sea beside you. Perfect for an easy run or a long run.
2. The Upper Rock (Hard, Hilly)
For a challenge, run up the Upper Rock. The road from the base to the top is about 4 km with 400 metres of climbing. The reward is panoramic views and the macaques cheering you on. Best done early morning before the cable car crowds.
3. The Mediterranean Steps (Technical, Advanced)
The Mediterranean Steps are a rugged path along the eastern cliffs of the Rock — more of a trail run than a jog, with steps, scrambles, and breathtaking drops. Not for the faint-hearted, but one of the most spectacular runs in Europe.
4. Eastern Beach to Catalan Bay (Easy, Scenic)
A flat run along the eastern beaches, with the Rock on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. About 3 km each way, with the option to swim at Catalan Bay.
5. The Airport Loop (Flat, Unique)
A short loop around the perimeter of the airport — flat, fast, and you might see a plane land while you run.
Gibraltar Parkrun
Gibraltar has a weekly parkrun — a free, timed 5 km run every Saturday morning at 9 AM. It's a great way to meet local runners and start your weekend. Check the parkrun website for the current location.
Practical Tips
- Run early: In summer, run before 9 AM to beat the heat.
- Carry water: There are few water fountains on the routes.
- Watch the macaques: If you run the Upper Rock, don't carry food — the monkeys will notice.
- Trail shoes: For the Mediterranean Steps, trail shoes are a good idea.
