☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock
Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

Gibraltar has three proper beaches and several smaller swimming spots — all on the east side, all Mediterranean, and far less crowded than the Costa del Sol. Here's the complete guide.
Catalan Bay
The most charming — a small fishing village with a sandy cove, colourful houses, and a couple of seafood restaurants. The water is calm and shallow, perfect for families. It's the most sheltered of the three and has a real village feel. Walk or drive through the tunnel from the town centre.
Sandy Bay
The smallest and quietest — a narrow strip of imported sand at the foot of the Rock. It's the least crowded, with clear water and a dramatic cliff backdrop. There are no facilities, so bring water and snacks. Best for a peaceful swim away from the crowds.
Eastern Beach
The longest and most popular — a wide stretch of sand running along the east side, with the airport runway at one end. It has sunbeds, a beach bar, and parking. The water is deeper and there can be a current, so it's better for confident swimmers. It's also the closest to the town centre.
Practical Tips
- All beaches face east — morning sun, afternoon shade from the Rock
- Water temperature: 24°C in summer, too cold to swim October–May
- Catalan Bay has the best facilities and restaurants
- Bring reef shoes — some areas are rocky
- Free parking at Eastern Beach; limited at Catalan Bay
For a family day, Catalan Bay is the pick — calm water, restaurants, and charm. For a quiet swim, Sandy Bay. For sunbeds and convenience, Eastern Beach. All three are free, clean, and a world away from the Costa crowds.
