☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

The Mediterranean Steps is Gibraltar's best hike — a dramatic cliff-edge trail along the eastern side of the Upper Rock with views across the Strait to Africa. It's challenging, exposed, and unforgettable. Here's everything you need to know.

The Route

The trail starts near Jews' Gate on the southern end of the Upper Rock and descends and climbs along the eastern cliff face before rejoining the main road near St Michael's Cave. It's roughly 1.5km but takes 1.5–2 hours because of the steep, uneven steps. The path is carved into the cliff with handrails in the most exposed sections.

Difficulty & Fitness

This is a moderate-to-strenuous hike. The steps are steep, uneven, and in places exposed with drops to one side. You need decent fitness, sure footing, and a head for heights. It's not suitable for young children, anyone with mobility issues, or in wet weather (the steps become slippery).

What to Bring

  • Sturdy walking shoes with grip — not sandals
  • 1.5 litres of water per person (no facilities on the trail)
  • Sun protection — the trail is fully exposed
  • Snacks — there's nowhere to buy food
  • Mobile phone with signal (good coverage throughout)

When to Go

Best in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when temperatures are 20–25°C. Avoid midday in summer (June–August) — it's dangerously hot with no shade. Start early morning in summer; any time of day is fine in spring and autumn.

Access

The trail is within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, so you need a Nature Reserve ticket (£18 for adults, includes the cable car, caves, and tunnels). You can reach the start by cable car, taxi tour, or on foot up the Rock (a steep 45-minute walk from town).

Safety

  • Don't hike in rain or high winds
  • Stay on the marked path — the cliffs are real
  • Watch for the Barbary macaques — don't feed them
  • Tell someone your route; mobile signal is good throughout

The Mediterranean Steps is one of the best short hikes in Europe — dramatic, varied, and with views that stop you in your tracks. Do it on a clear morning and you'll remember it forever.
