☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock
Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

St Michael's Cave is Gibraltar's most spectacular natural attraction — a vast limestone cavern deep inside the Rock, with dramatic stalactites, an underground lake, and a concert auditorium inside the main chamber. Here's everything you need to know.
The Cave
The cave system is enormous — the main chamber, known as the Cathedral Cave, reaches 45 metres high and has natural acoustics so good that it was converted into an auditorium seating 400 people. The stalactites are lit with coloured lights, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
There's also the Lower St Michael's Cave, a separate system accessed by guided tour only — it has an underground lake and is for the more adventurous (book ahead, limited numbers).
The Light Show
The main cave now features a light and sound installation — 'The Awakening' — which projects moving images and music across the cave walls. It runs on a loop during visiting hours and is included in your Nature Reserve ticket. It's beautiful, atmospheric, and worth the visit alone.
Concerts & Events
The Cathedral Cave's acoustics make it a unique concert venue. The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society and visiting orchestras perform here, and it's used for the Gibraltar International Music Festival and special events. Check the Visit Gibraltar events calendar for upcoming concerts — they sell out fast.
The Legends
The cave is linked to the myth of the Pillars of Hercules — the ancient name for the Rock of Gibraltar and Jebel Musa in Morocco. According to legend, the cave was bottomless and connected to Africa by a tunnel under the Strait. It's not, but the legend persists. During WWII, the cave was prepared as a military hospital (never used).
Practical Tips
- Included in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve ticket (£18 adults)
- Open daily 9am–6:15pm (last entry 5:30pm)
- Allow 30–45 minutes for the main cave
- Wear flat shoes — the paths are wet and slippery
- It's cool inside (around 18°C) — bring a light layer
- Accessible by cable car, taxi, or on foot (steep walk)
- Photography allowed; no flash near the light show
St Michael's Cave is unmissable — it's one of the most dramatic natural spaces in Europe, and the light show makes it feel like a cathedral of the earth. Combine it with the cable car and the macaques for a perfect Upper Rock day.
