Festive lights, Three Kings sweets, carol concerts, Santa grottos and a Boxing Day the whole family will remember. Your guide to a family Christmas on the Rock.
Gibraltar's festive calendar is surprisingly family-friendly — most events are free, walkable, and built around community rather than commerce. Here's what to do with kids between late November and early January:
Main Street, 5 January
The highlight for kids. Illuminated floats, sweets thrown by the handful, and a parade that's been running for generations. Bring a bag and an upside-down umbrella to catch more caramelos.
Casemates Square, late Nov
The countdown, the tree, the carols. Free and family-friendly — schools sing, food stalls sell mince pies and churros, and the square fills with families taking photos.
Main Street area, December
Grotto appearances and Santa meet-and-greets pop up at the larger shops and the ICC shopping centre through December. Check locally for dates — they're usually weekends.
Gibraltar National Museum
The museum runs festive craft sessions for children in December — card-making, decoration workshops and a chance to see the Barbary macaque exhibits. Small fee, book ahead.
John Mackintosh Hall & churches
Local schools perform carol concerts through December — open to the public and genuinely lovely. Check the Visit Gibraltar events page for dates.
Catalan Bay
Even in December, Catalan Bay is worth a walk. The beach café stays open for hot chocolates and ice cream (kids don't care about the weather), and the village feels properly festive.
All three of Gibraltar's main hotels welcome families at Christmas, but they suit different vibes:
Family rooms, a pool, walking distance to Main Street and Casemates. Christmas lunch in the dining room. The classic family choice.
On the quieter Catalan Bay side — sea views, a small beach, and a more relaxed pace. Good for families who want to avoid the Casemates crowds.
Kids love the novelty of a floating hotel. Marina-side, close to Ocean Village restaurants, and the NYE party is the biggest on the Rock.
Boxing Day (26 December) is the best family day of the festive season — the Upper Rock reopens, the crowds are thinner than Christmas Day, and the weather is usually mild enough for a proper outing. Here's a full day:
The Star Bar or Lord Nelson — full English to set up the day.
Reopens on Boxing Day with winter hours. Take the Rock Tour mini-bus — the cable car is still closed for rebuild.
The monkeys are always a hit with kids. Stay in the vehicle — don't touch or feed them.
Back on Main Street. Sacarello's does proper hot chocolate and cakes.
Main Street shops open with post-Christmas discounts. Duty-free perfume and electronics are cheapest now.
