☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

Gibraltar has been a fortress for over 300 years, and the Rock is honeycombed with military history — siege tunnels, WWII tunnels, gun batteries, and fortifications. Here's a trail that takes you through the best of it.

1. The Great Siege Tunnels

Start here — the 18th-century tunnels carved by hand during the 1779–83 siege. They're the original and the most atmospheric, with gun embrasures looking out over Spain. Allow 45 minutes. (Upper Rock, included in Nature Reserve ticket.)

2. The WWII Tunnels

A separate, larger network built during WWII — Gibraltar was a key naval base, and these tunnels housed a hospital, power station, and accommodation for the entire garrison. Some sections are open to visitors; others remain military. Allow 45 minutes. (Upper Rock, near the Great Siege Tunnels.)

3. Princess Caroline's Battery

An 18th-century gun battery with vintage artillery pieces and displays on Gibraltar's military history. It's on the Upper Rock road, between the tunnels and St Michael's Cave. Allow 20 minutes.

4. O'Hara's Battery

The highest gun battery on the Rock, at the southern end of the Upper Rock. It has a WWII-era gun and panoramic views over the Strait and Africa. The drive or walk up is worth it for the views alone. Allow 30 minutes.

5. The Moorish Castle

Back in town, the Moorish Castle (the Tower of Homage) is a medieval fortification built on the site of the original Moorish stronghold. It's the most visible piece of Gibraltar's pre-British military history. Allow 20 minutes. (At the northern end of Main Street.)

6. The City Walls

Gibraltar's old town is enclosed by 18th- and 19th-century walls and gates — the Grand Casemates Gates, Southport Gates, and the Line Wall Curtain. Walk the perimeter for a sense of the fortress. Allow 1 hour.

Practical Tips

  • Buy the Upper Rock Nature Reserve ticket (£18) — it covers the tunnels, batteries, cave, and macaques
  • Allow a full day for the Upper Rock sites; the town sites are a half-day
  • Wear walking shoes — lots of uneven ground and steep paths
  • Take a taxi tour if you want to cover everything without the walking
  • The cable car is the most scenic way up; a taxi is more efficient

Gibraltar's military heritage is extraordinary in its scale and preservation. A day on the Upper Rock followed by a walk around the old town walls is a journey through 300 years of fortress history — and it's all within a few square kilometres.
