☀️ Gibraltar heat warning — stay safe on the Rock

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 30°C with high humidity. Follow local advice, stay cool and hydrated, carry water (refill free at Casemates Square), avoid the Upper Rock between 12:00–16:00, and use sun protection (hat, sunglasses, SPF 30+). If you feel dizzy or stop sweating, seek shade and fluids immediately.

Swimming in Gibraltar: What You Need to Know

Gibraltar may be small — just 6.7 square kilometres — but it punches above its weight when it comes to swimming. The Rock sits at the entrance to the Mediterranean, where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, giving the water a clarity and warmth that improves dramatically from June through to October. Water temperatures peak at around 24–26°C in August and September.

All beaches in Gibraltar are on the east side of the Rock, facing the Mediterranean. The west side, facing the Bay of Gibraltar and Algeciras, is the harbour and is not suitable for swimming. Plan accordingly.

The Main Beaches

🏖️ Catalan Bay

Catalan Bay is Gibraltar's most picturesque and characterful beach — a genuine fishing village tucked beneath the eastern face of the Rock, with colourful houses, a small harbour, and a sandy beach that gets busy in summer but never feels overwhelming.

  • Beach type: Sand and fine shingle
  • Facilities: Beach bars, restaurants, sun lounger hire, toilets, showers
  • Water quality: Generally excellent — Blue Flag standard
  • Best for: Families, couples, those who want a proper beach experience with good food nearby
  • Getting there: Bus route 4 from the town centre, or a 30-minute walk via the eastern road tunnel

The village itself is worth exploring — Catalan Bay has a distinct identity, with its own dialect traditions and a fishing heritage that predates modern Gibraltar. The seafood at the beach restaurants is fresh and excellent. Pair your swim with a meal at one of the chiringuito-style bars on the beachfront.

🌊 Eastern Beach

The longest beach on the eastern side, Eastern Beach is a wide, open stretch of sand popular with locals for running, dog walking, and casual swimming. It's less picturesque than Catalan Bay but more spacious.

  • Beach type: Sand
  • Facilities: Car parking, nearby facilities in the adjacent retail area, less infrastructure on the beach itself
  • Water quality: Good
  • Best for: Those who want more space, early morning swimming, sport and exercise
  • Getting there: Bus route 4 or 5, or drive via the eastern road

🏝️ Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay sits between Catalan Bay and Eastern Beach — a smaller, quieter beach that feels more secluded. It's favoured by locals who want to avoid the busier spots.

  • Beach type: Sand and shingle
  • Facilities: Minimal — bring everything you need
  • Water quality: Excellent
  • Best for: Those looking for a quieter, less commercial beach experience
  • Getting there: A short walk from Eastern Beach or Catalan Bay

Swimming Pools

🏊 Rosia Pool

Gibraltar's main public outdoor pool, located at Rosia Bay on the western side of the Rock. Rosia Pool is seawater-fed and set in a beautiful historic location — the bay where Nelson's body was brought ashore after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Open in summer months, with changing facilities and a pleasant terrace.

🏊 Laguna Estate Pool

A more residential facility but open to the public — check current opening hours as these vary. Good alternative if Rosia is crowded.

Sea Swimming Tips for Gibraltar

  • Best months: June to October. July–September for warmest water (23–26°C). Outside this window, water is cooler but still swimmable for hardier swimmers.
  • Currents: The Strait of Gibraltar has strong currents, but the east-facing beaches are generally well-sheltered. Exercise caution in rough weather or if currents are visibly strong.
  • Jellyfish: Occasional jellyfish in late summer, particularly in August. Check locally before swimming — lifeguards on Catalan Bay will have current info.
  • Shade: The eastern cliff face of the Rock provides some afternoon shade, but bring sun protection — the Mediterranean sun is intense from May to September.

Combining a Beach Day With Gibraltar Sightseeing

A beach day at Catalan Bay pairs beautifully with a morning visit to the Upper Rock — take the cable car up early, visit the Barbary macaques and St Michael's Cave, then descend to Catalan Bay by mid-afternoon for a swim and late lunch. It's one of the best all-round days out Gibraltar offers.
